Why should Terron Sims be on the School Board? (MS Word Flyer)

Dear Friend,

I am running for the Democratic endorsement for a seat on the Arlington County School Board.  Education has always been an important issue for me.  In May 2003, during my service in Iraq, I formed the government of Tisa Nissan, a district in Baghdad consisting of approximately 1.25 million citizens in a 54 mile2 area. I established and mentored Tisa Nissan’s district council, along with its 10 neighborhood councils and the district’s committees and subcommittees. I oversaw the schools’ monthly assessments, focusing on security, challenging curriculum, and educational resources.  For over 30 schools, I allocated and supervised $1 million worth of school refurbishments.

As a leader in the Arlington community, I wish to continue leading our schools towards success, just as I did in Tisa Nissan.  With your help, we can encourage all of our students to achieve, excel and succeed.  It is vital that the community plays an active role in the academic achievement of our students.  Together, we can close the achievement gap.  Studies show, and life has proven, that it takes at least 5 mentors to raise a child.   As a community, we have a vested interest in our youths’ education.   Through our youth, our community will continue to thrive.   With the participation of local businesses, organizations, and yourself, we can provide our students with the necessary tools to achieve success.

It is my desire, as a School Board member, to:

  • Focus on underachieving students
  • Reach out to and empower parents
  • Expand opportunities for students to work in the community
  • Recruit and retain the best teachers
  • Focus on life long-learning skills
  • Practice fiscal responsibility by inviting businesses, government agencies, and non-profits to play a greater role in education.

Thank you for supporting the vision and goals of an aspiring School Board Member.  Please support me by voting during the Democratic Caucus on May 1, 2008 (Thomas Jefferson Middle School) and May 3 (Washington and Lee High School).

Sincerely,

 Terron Sims II
