My name is Terron Sims, II: a 2000 graduate of The United States Military Academy at West Point. My life of public service began during my deployment in Iraq: May 2003 to July 2004. During that time, I established and mentored the government in Baghdad's Tisa Nissan District, which is 53 sq miles with 1.25 million people. I spent much of my energy forwarding the cause and civil rights of Iraq's women, growing and strengthening the democratic process, and enhancing Tisa Nissan's municipality. My time and work in Baghdad created in me a strong desire to serve the public good back home in Virginia.
When I returned home to Virginia in the spring of 2005, I immediately became active in Democratic politics. I was an ardent volunteer for Bruce Roemmelt’s first House of Delegates run and became active with Veterans for Kaine. I joined the Arlington County Democratic Committee (ACDC) and Arlington Young Democrats (AYD), volunteering my time and energy at every function, event, and campaign. As the Outreach Director for AYD, I worked to link the vast communities throughout Arlington. My efforts led me to the NAACP, where I then began volunteering in the community through several mentor and tutoring programs.
During the first half of 2008, I ran for the Democratic endorsement for a seat on the Arlington County School Board. Though I did not gain the endorsement, that June, I was handpicked by the Obama national campaign to spearhead and serve as the Co-Director of Virginia Veterans for Obama. Additionally, I was a national surrogate to the Obama-Biden campaign on veterans and military family issues and national security, and served on the veterans and defense policy teams, where I wrote the policy on Service Members’ Life Insurance. During the DNC, I was on stage with Congressman Patrick Murphy, alongside the Next Generation Veterans for Obama, and was featured in the Steven Spielberg produced, Tom Hanks narrated, veterans tribute video.
I am currently on Organizing for America's (OFA) veterans steering committee and serve as President of the Northern Virginia Black Democrats. I am a member of the 8th Congressional District steering committee, Chairman of the Virginia Young Democrat’s Veterans’ Caucus, and am the ACDC Outreach Co-Chair.
With the assistance of some close colleagues, I have written the Democratic National Committee's Candidate's Veterans and National Security Platform. We are launching it in Virginia for the congressional campaigns and plan for the other campaigns to use it nationwide.
I sit on the Board of Principals for the Truman National Security Project and a member of The Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. In my free time, I tutor and mentor middle school and high school students and am an education and community activist.
